WHAT DOES "LOS VRYOSOS" MEAN?

Los Vryosos” doesn’t have a clean, literal translation—because “Vryosos” isn’t a standard Spanish word.

It is like a stylized or invented term, meant to evoke a certain identity, group, or feeling rather than a dictionary meaning.

It is best interpreted as: "The Lost Ones".

REVIEWS

"A Calóesque, varrio voice you hardly ever find in published books, richly and generously embellished by fine works of arte! Our gente should be deeply inspired by this varrio novela."

— Cheech Marin

“One of the book’s most powerful qualities is the way it moves fluidly between American and Mexican American cultures, blending Spanish and English into a rich, living voice. Its ending is profoundly redemptive—echoing the spirit of The Grapes of Wrath.”
Ruby K. Payne

THE STORY

LOS VRYOSOS is a story of struggle—and the consequences it leaves behind. It unfolds among the forgotten and invisible, those living en las calles frías [the cold streets] of San Antonio barrio. Here, a generation of lost youth drifts through life, burdened by hopelessness and self-hatred, having lost touch with the compassion and wisdom of their elders. Now, the jóvenes [the youth] fill jail cells and cemeteries, while roaming gangs spread fear and suffering among the hardworking gente.

Yet from this chaos emerges a powerful love story—one of longing, hope, and meaning. It follows Luna and Nazul, newly drawn to one another, and their close circle of friends as they begin to rediscover the strength needed to reclaim what has been lost.

Together, they challenge the despair surrounding them, loosen the grip of violence, and strive to honor the lessons of those who came before them. Their journey will reshape how you see the forgotten lives hidden in the shadows of the American Dream.

The book also features over 40 pages of the author’s original artwork.
